This website has been created by JG Land & Estates to provide up to date information about the proposed regeneration of Broadmeadow.
An update on the plans for Broadmeadow
JG Land & Estates submitted a planning application for Broadmeadow in July 2006. In the summer of last year, a planning appeal was heard to consider the merits of our mixed use development application for Broadmeadow including employment space, much needed affordable housing, local neighbourhood shops, a new health centre, a primary school, crèche, care home for the elderly, playing fields and 16 hectares of open space incorporating a nature reserve.
The Secretary of State’s decision was issued in October 2007. She agreed with much of our proposal and confirmed that the application had the potential to secure, “a major contribution towards an ‘urban renaissance’ in this part of the Ipswich urban area.” However, the application was refused as she found that it had “not yet been demonstrated conclusively that the employment allocation under Local Plan policy EM04 is no longer appropriate.”
The Secretary of State’s reservation regarding the future of the site for employment was influenced by Babergh District Council’s case at the Appeal. The Council believes that the site is required as a container yard to support the future expansion of the Port of Felixstowe. We are therefore keen to investigate the suitability of the site for such a use and other alternative employment scenarios.
As a first step, we have prepared a ‘Development Brief’
in accordance with the requirements of Local Plan policy EM04. JG Land & Estates remains committed to finding a viable future for Broadmeadow and to transforming this site into something Suffolk can be proud of.
We understand the importance of this site to the local community and have welcomed your participation in this process. Thank you to all of you who have provided your comments which have now been collated and are being fed back into the Development Brief document.
